ABOUT  RESTORE  SCAR THERAPY

Restore Scar Therapy was developed by Emma Holly, an experienced scar specialist and educator based in the UK. Drawing on years of clinical practice and collaboration with leading surgeons, physiotherapists, and bodywork professionals, Emma created a structured, evidence-informed approach to working with scar tissue.
Restore Scar Therapy is a non-invasive physical therapy method that uses a combination of specialized scar massage, fascial techniques, and tools to improve the function and appearance of scars. Developed by Emma Holly, a scar specialist, it aims to reduce pain and sensitivity, improve mobility, and soften scar tissue by stimulating healing and breaking down fibrous tissue. The therapy can be applied to both new and old scars after injury or surgery.

METHOD AND CLINICAL APPROACH

Restore Scar Therapy combines gentle, manual techniques with a detailed understanding of how the body and nervous system respond to trauma and repair. Therapists learn to assess and treat scar tissue and the surrounding fascial layers using precise, non-invasive touch that supports tissue mobility, circulation, and sensory reintegration.
Rather than applying force, the method works with the body — promoting improved glide, elasticity, and function while minimising discomfort and over-stimulation. This approach can complement physiotherapy, occupational therapy, hand therapy, and soft tissue work, fitting seamlessly into existing clinical frameworks.

TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Restore Scar Therapy training programme offers comprehensive, evidence-informed education for health and bodywork professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, hand therapists, massage therapists, MLD practitioners, and NMTs.
Courses cover the science of wound healing and scar formation, assessment techniques, treatment protocols, and clinical reasoning — ensuring practitioners gain both theoretical understanding and hands-on confidence.

The curriculum is continually evolving, reflecting the latest research, clinical insights, and practical advances in scar management. Therapists can train to become a Restore Scar Therapy Practitioner,  specialise as an Oncology Scar Specialist or Caesarean Scar Specialist. In addition, the Understanding Scars online course offers an in-depth exploration of the science of scars, providing a strong theoretical foundation for those wishing to deepen their knowledge before or alongside practical training.

Restore Scar Therapy training is now available in Ireland, taught by Sona Dowds, a Restore Scar Therapy practitioner and educator, passionate about advancing gentle, effective, and evidence-based scar care.
